Another great why to drive traffic to your local business is definitely social media and bookmarking sites. The relevance and value of social networking sites is more important than ever. So using social networks and LBS will bring traffic and results on your organic results and SEO. So, SOcial media are for me the way to generate traffic and awareness for your local business. The word of mouth will do the rest.

@Jack Agree links from local directories don't have the value they once had.

This post is now over two years old.

As far as wasting time on local directory links ... there are good links and bad. A link from local Chamber of Commerce directory listing sure can't hurt. Agree that spending time getting links from weak directories that list junk and add no value are a waste of time. The business would be better served spending time, effort, and money creating great content

@Steve - automated tools for link building are silly and pretty much useless. Take ScrapeBox for example, you can find hundreds of thousands auto-approve links (that will accept your comment instantly) but few of those are dofollow and to the content you are looking for.
You can find links manually by simply searching google, you can involve yourself into conversations, you can learn something from those articles and so on. Link building is really not that hard, it's pretty fun and does not need automation.
And yes, your website will be a target for google if you spam your same comment over and over again to 46583678943 different blogs.
Just search for blogs manually and bring your contribution to articles and you will be rewarded (keywordluv for the win!).

@Walt - i tend to disagree with you (no offense) on the last part of your article about directories. Directories, be them world wide or local, are a downside to your website. They are not what they used to be. Directories nowadays are link farms and link spam and Google will place zero weight to a link in a directory. Not to mention paying for a premium link from a directory... waste of money for nothing.
Sorry if you think I am trashing your article or methods but directories are obsolete and useless now. Don't waste your time on them.

Normal online marketing has a much wider range which is not always necessary. Many small companies tend to target local market first. For all such companies these tips are really helpful. Also adding the business location to Google Maps/Google Business helps a lot.
