Google recently expanded their local search results to display 10 companies when a user types in a keyword with a city in the search term. Often, these results are at or near the top of the first page of Google’s search results.

But, generally, there are more than 10 companies competing for the term. A user can click on the “more results” tab to get additional listings, but realistically, these 10 companies have the best chance of getting listed.

So, how do you improve your ranking and get listed in the so called “10 pack?”

First, you need to fill out your profile at Google.com/local. Fill it out as completely as possible because the more information you give Google, the more likely they will rank you high.

Next, you should have a website that people can link to. If you have no website, Google will display a page with your contact information. But initial studies have shown that listings that include links to a business’ website increase the odds of being in the top 10 results.

One of the factors that seems to be at play is if your location is close to the city center. Unfortunately, Google doesn’t seem to be able to determine the distance between the user’s location and the businesses. So, they use the city center as a substitute. As there is no way you can change your address easily, there may not be much you can do about this.

You can boost your ranking within local search by registering with various free yellow pages and directories. Registering for review sites like yelp.com can also help.

Finally, it seems that uploading photos in your listing boosts your ranking. Show a photo of your storefront, happy customers using your product or service, and the owners or workers. All of these things can help.

As the Google “10 Pack” becomes more important for local businesses to attract customers, every bit of optimization in your listing can help.
